Precipice To Abyss

I chose life over temptation

Standing at the precipice,
the dizzying height elevates
and nauseates me.
I want to step back to safety.
Enjoy the view but without the risks.

The abyss covered with green cushion
calls to me.
I know if I jump
there is no return.
Yet I am often tempted
to feel the thrill of the fall
towards the green carpet below
to watch it advance toward me
at lightning speed.

For a few seconds of excitement,
should I risk many years
of potential joys and celebrations?

The solo journey downward would be a lonely one.
Would it mean anything if I can’t talk to anyone about my special experience?

I turn and walk back toward my dwelling,
the sun behind me pulls back its rays as it departs,
My only witness soon leaves me in the dark.
