I first saw Sivakarthikeyan in Doctor, a slick thriller with an underwhelming ending. His poker-face performance was bland but engaging. Hence, I didn’t have much expectations as a lead actor. But Maaveeran was highly recommended to me by my movie buddy Deepesh and my favorite movie YouTube channel Tried & Refused, so I gave it a try. My wife joined in. And like it happened many times before for movies like Karthikeya 2 and HanuMan, she ended up liking the movie more than me.

After watching Minnal Murali and HanuMan, it was clear to me that the South Indian movie industry is experimenting with the superhero genre and coming up with some interesting and fresh stories in this. Maaveeran, however, is different because it doesn’t feel like a superhero movie but a movie of a common man trying to get by in the harsh real world. And yet it is a superhero movie because the premise of the movie establishes that from the first scene itself. This neat integration of the super with the common is what makes this movie an engaging and refreshing watch.

The movie does very well overall, be it performances, storytelling, visuals, and background music. I was highly impressed by the background score of the villain that matched with the personality of the character as portrayed by the actor. Sivakarthikeyan was impressive as a simpleton common man who wants to avoid all confrontations and adjust in life. My favorite character, however, is his mother who is ready to fight tooth and nail for what she believes in.

The highlight of the movie for me is the humor that is so seamlessly integrated into the movie and doesn’t feel lazy or cringy. It is situational and takes the plot forward.

Overall, Maaveeran is a simple story with relatable characters such that one can feel their struggles. The humor and the interesting take on the superhero genre make it a must-watch for superhero fans. After a long day at work (or on a lazy weekend), you can unwind with this movie on Prime Video.
